Reston is a bit different from most of the surrounding county — nearly the whole community, over 60,000 residents, is automatically a member of Reston Association through the original Deed of Dedication, and many neighborhoods also sit under their own cluster or condo association on top of that. It's one of the most thoroughly covenant-covered communities in Northern Virginia, which is worth knowing before you plan a delivery.

County permit rules in Reston are the same as the rest of Fairfax County — no permit needed for driveway placement, a permit required only if the dumpster sits on the street or right-of-way. Where Reston is different is Reston Association: nearly every property here falls under RA's design and use covenants, and many neighborhoods have an additional cluster or condo association layered on top. We haven't found a rule specifically targeting short-term construction dumpsters, and a container for the length of a typical project is generally a non-issue — but if you're planning to keep one longer than a week or two, it's worth a quick check with Reston Association or your specific cluster association first, since Reston's covenant coverage is more extensive than most communities nearby.
