"Fairfax" actually covers two different jurisdictions here — the independent City of Fairfax, and the much larger unincorporated Fairfax County that surrounds it. We serve both the same way, but the permit rules differ slightly depending on which one your street falls under, so it's worth knowing which applies to you.
📋 Permits — Different Rules for City vs. County Streets
Driveway placement generally needs no permit anywhere in Fairfax. Street or right-of-way placement is where it splits: if you're on a county-maintained road in unincorporated Fairfax County, that's a VDOT or Fairfax County right-of-way permit. If you're inside the independent City of Fairfax on a city-maintained street, the City of Fairfax has its own separate Right-of-Way Permit process through its Public Works department. We'll help confirm which one applies to your address if street placement looks likely.

Fairfax County's noise ordinance prohibits servicing any dumpster within 150 feet of a residence between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. (Chapter 109.1 / Noise Ordinance Sect. 108.1-4-1). We schedule all Fairfax deliveries and pickups during normal daytime hours anyway, so this is more of a fun fact than a real limitation — but if you were picturing a pre-dawn drop-off, that's why we won't do it.
