A Call From a Son
The call came from a son. His father had passed away at 88, and the family now had to clear his apartment at an assisted living community in Leesburg. He told me he'd found us on Google after reading about a similar job we did in Herndon. From the way he talked about his dad, it was clear he was a man who was deeply loved.
Jobs like this aren't really about junk. They're about helping a family through one of the hardest weeks they'll have. My job is to make the physical part simple, quiet, and respectful.
Working With the Facility
The apartment was on the third floor — a living room and a bedroom. Before we moved anything, the son and I spoke with the facility's management together. They approved the freight elevator and the back entrance, so we could bring everything out without crowding the hallways or the main lobby where residents spend their day.
💡 Tip for Families
Before the cleanout, take what you want to keep — photos, documents, keepsakes — and ask management about their move-out rules: deadline, elevator, entrance, and hours. It makes the day much easier for everyone.
Two Rooms, One Trip
Batuhan and I worked as a two-person crew. In the living room there were two recliners, a dining table with chairs, a wooden cabinet, side tables, and a walker. In the bedroom: a long wooden dresser, a twin bed, a nightstand, and a desk chair. We used a hand truck and furniture dollies, took everything down the freight elevator, and loaded it through the back door. It filled our trailer completely.

When we left, both rooms were empty and ready for the facility's move-out walkthrough — and the family didn't have to lift a thing.

Usually the facility needs to know when movers or haulers are coming. On this job, the son and I spoke with management together, and they approved the freight elevator and the back entrance for us.
