Heavy lifting on Georgetown Pike (my back still hurts)

Estate cleanouts are different from regular junk removal. It's not just stuff. It's someone's whole life, packed into rooms that a family is now trying to sort through while also dealing with grief, logistics, lawyers, and real estate agents. It's a lot. We try to stay out of the way and just do our job quietly.

This one was on Georgetown Pike. Big house, beautiful property. The family had already been through and taken what they wanted. Now they needed everything else gone before the listing photos.

Here's the thing nobody tells you about estate cleanouts in Great Falls: the furniture in these older homes is genuinely heavy. We're talking antique armoires that weigh probably 300 lbs. Solid wood dressers. A dining table that took four of us to move. My back was talking to me by noon.

What We Did With the Good Stuff

We don't just dump everything. Before any load leaves, we walk through and pull anything that's in decent condition — furniture, lamps, kitchenware, books. That day we had a solid pile of stuff that was too good for a landfill.

We took it to a donation center in Fairfax. Habitat for Humanity ReStore took the furniture. Some of it will end up in someone else's home, which feels better than a dumpster. The family appreciated that we asked before just hauling everything.

We were extra careful with the floors. Hardwood throughout, and the family was stressed about scratches — understandably. We used felt pads, went slowly on the heavy pieces, and took the doors off the hinges where needed. No damage. That matters on a property going on the market.

Long day. Three truckloads. By the time we finished the house was empty and clean and ready for whatever comes next. The daughter shook my hand at the door and said "thank you for being careful with everything." That stuck with me.
