Some houses take decades to become a home. This one in Fairfax was bought thirty years ago by a Kuwaiti couple, back when work still pulled them overseas more often than not. For years, the house was more of a waypoint than a residence — a place to land between trips, never quite settled into. Now in his sixties and easing out of that back-and-forth life, the homeowner made a decision: it was time to finally live in the house they'd owned for half their lives, not just pass through it.

Somewhere in that first conversation, the homeowner found out I was Turkish. His whole tone shifted — warmer, more at ease, like talking to a neighbor instead of a contractor he'd just met. Once the plan was set, we got to work. Upper and lower cabinets came out first, then the countertops, then the tile backsplash — piece by piece, until the kitchen was down to bare walls.

Further along — upper cabinets gone, appliances staged for their turn.
By the end, the space was stripped down to bare walls and swept clean — no leftover debris, no scraps for the next crew to deal with, just an open kitchen ready for its rebuild.
After — bare walls, swept floor, ready for the renovation to begin.
Cabinets, counter pieces, and backsplash tile, loaded and hauled away.
