Hot Tub & Jacuzzi Removal Cost in Northern Virginia

Updated May 2026 · By DMV Go Junk · Serving Northern Virginia, DC & Maryland

Hot tubs are one of the most underestimated removal jobs in Northern Virginia. They look like a big box sitting in a backyard, and homeowners often assume it's a straightforward lift-and-haul. It rarely is. A standard 6-seat hot tub weighs 600–900 lbs empty. With water, it can exceed 4,000 lbs. The shell is awkward, the access is usually tight, and getting it out without damaging the deck, fence, or surrounding landscaping takes planning.

At DMV Go Junk, hot tub removal is one of our most common specialty jobs across Herndon, Reston, McLean, Great Falls, Vienna, and the broader DMV area. Here's exactly what it costs, what affects the price, and what you need to know before booking.

Hot Tub Removal Pricing — Seat by Seat

Whether you call it a hot tub, jacuzzi, or spa, we price removal by the number of seats — it's the most consistent indicator of size, weight, and how much work is involved. All prices include full disassembly on-site, hauling, and disposal.

Hot Tub SizePriceTypical Weight (empty)
2-seat$240300–450 lbs
4-seat$480500–650 lbs
6-seat$720700–900 lbs
8-seat$960900–1,200 lbs

💡 Not sure how many seats? Count the molded seat depressions inside the tub. Each individual seat counts — including corner seats and lounger positions. When in doubt, text us a photo and we'll confirm before booking.

What Drives the Cost Up

The seat-based price applies to standard situations — hot tub in an accessible backyard, truck can get within reasonable distance, no unusual obstacles. A number of factors can push the price above the standard rate:

Difficult or No Vehicle Access

If the truck can't get close to the backyard — because of a narrow gate, no side yard access, a locked fence, or a long carry across the property — we need to hand-carry the disassembled pieces a longer distance. This adds significant time and labor. We assess this on-site and tell you before we start.

Enclosed or Sunroom Location

Hot tubs installed inside sunrooms, screened porches, or enclosed structures require partial disassembly of the enclosure to get the tub out, or the tub needs to be cut into smaller pieces. This is quoted separately — text us photos of the situation and we'll give you an accurate number.

Rooftop or Elevated Decks

A hot tub on a standard ground-level or first-floor deck is fine. A hot tub on an elevated deck with no ground-level access point, or on a rooftop, requires special planning. We've done these, but the price reflects the additional complexity.

Water Still Inside

If the hot tub hasn't been drained when we arrive, we can't move it. A full hot tub weighs 3,000–6,000 lbs — far beyond what can be safely moved. We'll need to reschedule, and a return trip fee may apply. See the section below on what you need to do before we arrive.

What You Need to Do Before We Arrive

Two things must be done before we can remove your hot tub — and neither of them is our job to do:

1. Drain the Hot Tub Completely

Every drop of water needs to be out. Most hot tubs have a drain valve at the bottom — connect a garden hose and run it to a drain or a low point in the yard. The process takes 1–2 hours depending on the size. Some tubs also have a secondary drain for the footwell area. Once the main drain is done, use a wet/dry vacuum to get any remaining water out of the footwell and the pump cavity.

Don't have time to drain it yourself? A plumber or pool service company can do it. Some municipalities have rules about where the water can be discharged — check local guidelines.

2. Disconnect the Electrical

Hot tubs run on dedicated 240V circuits with a disconnect box nearby. The power needs to be off and the wiring disconnected before we touch the tub. This is a job for a licensed electrician — it typically takes under an hour and costs $75–150. Do not attempt to disconnect it yourself unless you're a licensed electrician.

⚠️ If the tub still has water or the electrical isn't disconnected when we arrive, we cannot proceed. A return trip fee applies. Please confirm both are done before booking.

Access Situations — What's Doable and What Isn't

Access is the most variable factor in hot tub removal. Here's how we handle the most common situations in Northern Virginia:

Standard Backyard with Gate Access

The most common setup. The hot tub is in the backyard, there's a gate on the side of the house wide enough to carry pieces through (typically 36"+ is fine). Standard pricing applies. We disassemble on-site, carry pieces through the gate, load into the trailer.

No Gate — Long Carry Around the House

If there's no side gate, we carry pieces around the front of the house. As long as the distance isn't excessive and the terrain is manageable, this is doable at standard rates. Very long carries or difficult terrain may add a small access surcharge.

Fenced Yard with Small Gate

Gates narrower than 36" require more disassembly — the tub shell needs to be cut into smaller sections to fit through. This adds time. We'll quote this on-site after seeing the situation.

On a Deck

Standard open decks are fine. We work around deck railings and furniture. If the deck has a pergola or roof structure that limits height clearance, we assess on arrival.

Inside an Enclosure

Call for quote. These situations vary too much to price without seeing them.

DIY vs Hiring a Pro — The Real Math

Some homeowners try to remove hot tubs themselves. Here's what that typically involves:

  • Renting a reciprocating saw to cut the shell — $50–80/day
  • Renting a dumpster — $400–600 for a week (and many HOAs prohibit them)
  • Getting 4–6 people to help carry pieces
  • Making multiple trips to the dump for the pieces
  • Disposal fees at the transfer station

Total DIY cost typically runs $500–700 before accounting for your time and the risk of deck or fence damage during removal. And a full Saturday.

Professional removal at $480–720 includes everything — labor, equipment, hauling, and disposal. Most jobs are done in 2–3 hours. For most homeowners, the math favors hiring a pro.

Hot tubs aren't recyclable in the traditional sense. The components break down like this:

  • Fiberglass shell — goes to the landfill. Fiberglass isn't recyclable at most facilities.
  • Cabinet panels — usually wood or synthetic wood, goes to the landfill.
  • Insulation foam — goes to the landfill.
  • Plumbing and jets — plastic components, goes to the landfill.
  • Motor and pump — metal components, recycled as scrap metal when possible.
  • Electrical components — recycled as e-waste when possible.

We haul to licensed disposal facilities in Fairfax County. There's no separate disposal surcharge for hot tubs — it's included in the price.

Hot Tub Removal Cost by City — Northern Virginia

Pricing is the same across all cities we serve — $120 per seat, no travel surcharge. But every city has its own housing patterns, access challenges, and HOA situations that affect how a job goes. Here's what we typically see in each area:

Hot Tub Removal in Herndon, VA

Herndon is our home base — we're here every day. Most Herndon hot tubs are in the backyards of townhouses in communities like McNair Farms, Countryside, and Cascades. Townhouse gates are often narrow, so we carry pieces to the street when needed. Standard pricing applies for all Herndon jobs.

Hot Tub Removal in Reston, VA

Reston's cluster home communities — Lake Anne, South Lakes, Hunters Woods — often have shared courts with limited truck access. We park at the nearest point and carry. A lot of Reston's older homes have hot tubs that have been in place for 20+ years, often fully embedded in decks. These require more disassembly time but same-day service is usually available.

Hot Tub Removal in Fairfax, VA

Fairfax has a wide mix — large colonials in Burke and Fairfax Station with open backyards, and townhouse communities in Fair Lakes and Centreville with tighter access. Larger properties generally mean easier access and faster jobs. HOA rules vary but most allow daytime removal without issue. See a real Fairfax removal, start to finish →

Hot Tub Removal in McLean, VA

McLean homes tend to be larger, with well-landscaped backyards and often professional-grade hot tub installations. Access is generally good. Some homes have elaborate deck structures that require careful disassembly to avoid damage to the surrounding area. We take our time on these jobs.

Hot Tub Removal in Great Falls, VA

Great Falls properties are typically large with long driveways and spacious backyards — access is usually excellent. Hot tubs here tend to be higher-end and larger (6–8 seat), which means more disassembly but no unusual challenges. Same-day service is almost always available.

Hot Tub Removal in Vienna, VA

Vienna's mix of mid-century ranches and newer construction means hot tubs in all kinds of configurations — ground level, on decks, next to pool enclosures. Older homes sometimes have hot tubs installed before fences were added, meaning the fence has to come down partially to get the tub out. We assess on-site and quote accordingly.

Hot Tub Removal in Arlington, VA

Arlington's density means tighter lots and less maneuvering room. Many Arlington jobs involve carrying disassembled pieces through narrow side yards or up/down exterior stairs. Condo buildings occasionally have rooftop or courtyard hot tubs — those are quoted separately. For standard backyard jobs, pricing is the same.

Hot Tub Removal in Alexandria, VA

Old Town and Del Ray have older homes with smaller yards and sometimes no side gate access at all. We've done plenty of Alexandria jobs where every piece had to come through the house — manageable but adds time. Potomac Yard and Carlyle neighborhoods have newer construction with better access. Text us photos and we'll assess before committing to a price.

Hot Tub Removal in Ashburn, VA

Ashburn's newer developments — Brambleton, Broadlands, Ashburn Village — have well-planned layouts with good truck access and standard backyard gates. These tend to be some of our most straightforward hot tub jobs. HOA rules are generally clear and truck access is rarely an issue.
