Garage Cleanout Guide for Fairfax County Homeowners

✍️ DMV Go Junk Team📍 Serving DC, MD & Northern Virginia

Fairfax County is our home market — we've cleared garages from Herndon to Springfield, Chantilly to Burke. Here's a guide specific to Fairfax County homeowners who are thinking about a garage cleanout.

Fairfax County Transfer Station Options

If you're considering DIY disposal, Fairfax County operates several facilities. Understanding your options helps you plan — and understand why professional disposal costs what it does.

FacilityLocationNotes
I-66 Transfer Station4618 West Ox Road, FairfaxAccepts household waste, appliances, electronics, brush
I-95 Landfill Complex9850 Furnace Road, LortonAccepts household waste, construction debris, yard waste
Newington Household Hazardous Waste6053 Union Mill RoadPaint, chemicals, pesticides, batteries (free for residents)

Current Fairfax County self-haul rates: approximately $0.065 per pound with a $12 minimum. A typical garage cleanout (1,000–2,000 lbs) costs $65–$130 in disposal fees alone — before truck rental and your time.

What's Different About Fairfax County Garage Cleanouts

HOA Communities

A large portion of Fairfax County is in HOA-governed communities — Reston Association, Fair Oaks, Burke Centre, various Chantilly and Centreville developments. Most HOAs have rules about truck parking, working hours, and placing items on the street. We're familiar with these requirements and work within them.

Large Properties

Fairfax County homes, especially in the western parts of the county (Great Falls, Oakton, Clifton), tend to have large lots with detached garages, sheds, and outbuildings. These jobs often involve more volume than a standard suburban garage cleanout.

Older Homes in Established Neighborhoods

Areas like Annandale, Burke, and parts of Fairfax City have homes built in the 1960s–1980s that have been in the same family for decades. These are often the most packed garages — decades of accumulation that finally needs to go. For these jobs, we sometimes recommend a two-truck approach to clear everything in one visit.

Pricing for Fairfax County

Since we're based in Herndon, Fairfax County jobs have minimal travel fees. Our pricing:

Job TypePrice Range
One-car garage cleanout$299 – $500
Two-car garage cleanout$450 – $750
Garage + storage shed$600 – $1,000
Full estate cleanout$800 – $1,500+

Working Around Fairfax County HOA Rules

More than 60% of Fairfax County residents live in HOA-governed communities. This affects junk removal in practical ways:

  • Truck parking: Many HOAs prohibit commercial trucks from parking on residential streets. We can usually park on the main road and carry items to the truck — but let us know your HOA situation when you book so we can plan accordingly.
  • Working hours: Most Fairfax HOAs restrict work to 7am-7pm weekdays and 8am-5pm weekends. We work within these hours.
  • Dumpster restrictions: Many Fairfax HOAs prohibit dumpsters entirely, which is one reason junk removal is often the only practical option here.
  • Staging items outside: Don't leave bulk items on the curb overnight in an HOA community. Schedule junk removal for the same day you pull things out.

Fairfax County's Bulk Trash Program

Fairfax County offers bulk trash pickup, but it's limited: 5 items per week maximum, specific items excluded (appliances, mattresses require advance scheduling), and you're at the mercy of the county's schedule. For a full garage cleanout, bulk pickup alone can take 3-4 weeks. Most homeowners find that a single junk removal appointment is faster and less frustrating.

The exception: if you have just 2-3 items and no deadline, bulk pickup makes sense. For anything larger, call us.

Items That Come Up Often in Fairfax Garages

  • Old exercise equipment — Treadmills, ellipticals, weight benches. We take all of these, typically $75–$150 per large piece.
  • Lawnmowers and outdoor power equipment — We take gas-powered equipment. Drain the fuel first or we can do it on-site.
  • Old paint cans — We cannot take paint. Fairfax County's HHW facility accepts paint for free.
  • Tires — We take up to 4 tires at $15 each. Larger quantities should go to a tire retailer.
  • Holiday decorations — Common in older Fairfax homes. Donatable items in good condition can go to Habitat ReStore or Goodwill.
